Channel 4 – The Streaming TV & Content Model

Here’s some information about Channel 4’s turnover and overhead:

  • 2023 revenuesChannel 4’s total revenue for 2023 was £1.02 billion, which is the third consecutive year of revenues topping £1 billion. However, the broadcaster reported a deficit of £52 million, which was its highest ever. 
  • Digital revenuesDigital advertising revenues grew by 10% in 2023 to £280 million, making up 27% of Channel 4’s total revenues. This is ahead of other UK and international commercial broadcasters
  • Linear ad revenueLinear ad revenue fell 16% from £766 million to £642 million. 
  • Streaming viewsChannel 4’s streaming views grew to a record 1.6 billion in 2023, up 14% from 2022. 
  • Streaming minutesStreaming minutes were up 23% in 2023, to 56 billion, making up 15% of total Channel 4 viewing. 
  • StrategyChannel 4’s CEO, Alex Mahon, said that the deficit was the result of financing the broadcaster’s transition from linear to digital. The broadcaster’s “Fast Forward” strategy aims to become a digital-first public service streamer by 2030.
